The series received three Golden Globe nominations, eight Emmy awards, and the Saturn Award for Best Horror Television of 2023. Critics emphasised that "The Last of Us" is not solely geared towards video game enthusiasts.

Viewer interest in "The Last of Us" was immense. However, there were significant issues watching the premiere episode in the United States. On the day of the premiere, users encountered errors on their screens. DownDetector reported that "HBO Max couldn't fully handle the server load."
