Gymnastics controversy: Sabrina Voinea's missed medal after review dispute
6 August 2024 12:03
Sabrina Voinea achieved 5th place in the gymnastics finals at the Olympic Games. The Romanian gymnast was penalized with deductions for stepping off the mat, but video evidence shows that such an incident did not occur. Without the deductions, she could have been celebrating a medal in Paris.
Sabrina Maneca Voinea took fifth place in the floor finals in Paris in 2024 and scored 13.7 points. The gymnast stated that she felt unjustly treated by the score she received in the finals at the Olympic Games in Paris because she knew she deserved a higher score.
Voinea appealed, but ultimately, the result remained unchanged. The issue centres on Voinea being penalised for supposedly stepping off the mat despite all the videos showing that no such incident had occurred.
The athlete's mother shared a video and photos on social media, which indicated her daughter did not break any rules. Despite this evidence, the judges refused to reconsider their decision.
Olympics 2024. The conspiracy?
She performed the same routine in the qualifiers and scored 13.9 points then. With that score, it would have been a bronze. And they took away another tenth of a point, which is why she doesn’t have a medal. Because the American is at the end of her career, Sabrina can still compete in future Olympic Games. The best should win, regardless of age. Even the Americans were confused.
Ultimately, Brazilian gymnast Rebeca Andrade won the Olympic championship in floor exercises on Monday, GMT. After an exciting competition, Andrade surpassed two Americans. Simone Biles took second place, having already won three gold medals in Paris and has been a legend in this discipline for several years.
