Greenland: Russia eyes strategic territory amid US tensions
The international dispute over Greenland has taken a new turn as Russia seeks to involve itself in the American-Danish conflict. A Russian lawmaker, speaking on state television, suggested that Greenland should be divided into sections, proposing potential negotiations with the United States. He also hinted at a comparable scenario for the Svalbard archipelago.
Donald Trump's remarks about Greenland continue to resonate. At a press conference, the American president-elect stated that the USA needs the island for its economic security. He did not rule out the possibility that the United States might use force to take Greenland from Denmark.
Trump thus sparked an international scandal. The Axios portal reported that Danish authorities are discussing Greenland's security with Donald Trump's team.
Russian politicians are beginning to address the issue. Moscow's authorities have been interested in the island for years. The Kremlin would like to acquire Greenland for geopolitical and economic reasons. Donald Trump's words have revived the issue in Russian propaganda media.
Does Russia need Greenland? Russian politician said so
Russian lawmaker Andrei Gurulev stated that "Russia undoubtedly needs Greenland" and proposed dividing the island.
We need Greenland, no joke. At the very least, we could make a deal with Trump and split Greenland into a couple of pieces. It is clear that Denmark will never be there again. Svalbard is also extremely important to us. There will be some very nice [Russian] bases. - said Gurulev.
Gurulev's words were received with interest by guests in the studio, including Vladimir Solovyov.
Solovyov, reflecting on the Russian lawmaker's remarks, expressed approval of the idea that defensive strategies should always transition into offensive actions.
