Google is changing the inbox in Gmail. Users who utilize smartphone category divisions will soon see a new message segregation. Gmail will recognize "less important" emails in the inbox and then move them lower on the list.

The website 9to5Google noted the change in Gmail. The new feature should theoretically already be visible to everyone, but since it is being rolled out in stages, delays are possible (usually up to two weeks). After the change, Gmail will automatically recognize "less important" messages, such as automatic notifications or purchase receipts, and place them lower on the received list in the "updates" category.

Of course, the new feature can be turned off, allowing users to keep the standard inbox where messages are displayed in the order they are received and are not grouped into categories. Most users who appreciate this automatic division have praised the new idea of sorting "less important" messages into another group, hence the ongoing rollout to all Gmail users after successful testing.

According to Google, the new feature is already making its way to Gmail on Android and iOS. In practice, this change is expected to be progressively enabled on the server side. Still, to ensure it appears quickly on your phone or tablet, manually forcing an update of Gmail to the latest version is recommended. You can do this by checking the update list in the Google Play Store. The list is available as one of the options after clicking your avatar in the app store.
