A school trip to the United Kingdom for first-year German high school students ended in a tragic accident when their coach overturned on the motorway near the town of Wenden. The incident resulted in 27 students being injured.
The serious accident occurred on Sunday, April 21, on motorway number 45, close to the town of Wenden. The teenagers, hailing from Marburg, were en route to the United Kingdom.
The double-decker bus, carrying 73 individuals, unexpectedly veered off the road and tipped onto its side. In the mishap, 27 passengers were injured, four sustaining serious injuries, while the coach driver was hospitalized.
Dortmund police spent several hours at the scene gathering evidence, necessitating the closure of the Sauerland motorway towards Dortmund to facilitate the rescue operation. This included the extraction of the injured by firefighters and the lifting of the coach.
The students' trip to the United Kingdom was subsequently cancelled, and they returned to Marburg. The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
