Josep Borrell, the European Union's foreign affairs chief, on Monday expressed hope that EU member states would agree to Ukraine using the weapons supplied to it for attacks on targets located within Russian territory.
- I’ve been saying once and again that Ukraine should be able to use the arms we provided to them, in order to not only stop the arrows but also to be able to hit the archers. (...) I continue believing this is what has to be done. I’m sure we will discuss once again. I hope member states will agree on that - Borrell said before the meeting with the EU foreign ministers in Brussels.
Borrell emphasised that this issue would be discussed again during the EU foreign ministers' meeting in Brussels. His statement points to growing tensions in the region and the need for decisive action in response to Russia's aggression.
Borrell's statement is important in the context of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, where military support from the European Union is key.
The decision to allow Ukraine to attack targets in Russia could significantly impact the dynamics of the conflict and Ukraine's defensive strategy.
The EU foreign ministers' meeting in Brussels aims to discuss further steps to support Ukraine and potential sanctions against Russia.
Borrell expressed hope that EU member states will make a joint decision enabling Ukraine to defend itself more effectively against Russian aggression.
