Escape to Lihou: Rent your own private island retreat

Many people dream of owning their own island. Even if you're not a millionaire, you can fulfil this dream, at least for a few days. Off the coast of Europe lies an island with just one house, which you can rent along with the entire surrounding land. While there's no internet or shops, you'll find beautiful nature and a rich history.

The dream of staying on a private island can become a reality thanks to Lihou Island, located off the western coast of Guernsey, in the western part of the English Channel, where it meets the Celtic Sea.

For only £40 per night, you can rent the sole house on this deserted island, overseen by the Lihou Charitable Trust.

A unique experience on Lihou Island

Lihou Island once had a thriving seaweed industry, but today it remains uninhabited. Access is only possible via a stony path at low tide, making it ideal for adventure enthusiasts. The absence of internet and shops is offset by its abundant nature and picturesque views.

Attractions and challenges

You can explore the ruins of an ancient monastery on the island and observe natural rock formations visible at low tide, such as the Venus Pool. This pool is 45 yards long and 5 yards wide, perfect for a swim in water that is about 3 yards deep.

The island is also a haven for birdwatchers, providing refuge to many rare, migratory species.

Prepare for an adventure

A stay on Lihou requires some preparation. Guests need to carry their luggage along a steep path and manage without conveniences like internet or food delivery services. It is an excellent opportunity to disconnect from civilisation and embrace nature.

The perfect place for groups

Lihou House can accommodate about 10 people, making it ideal for group trips. For just £40 per person, you can experience island life, offering more than just luxurious amenities. It's a unique spot that invites you to take a break from daily life and immerse yourself in the beauty of nature.
