Elon Musk's controversial remark ignites backlash amid tragedy

The tragic events in Magdeburg have already been commented on by Chancellor Olaf Scholz. In response to the terrorist attack in Germany, there was also a controversial comment from Elon Musk, the billionaire and known ally of Donald Trump. He is demanding a resignation and calling the chancellor a "fool."

After 7 p.m. at the Christmas market in the capital of Saxony-Anhalt, the driver of a dark BMW drove into a crowd of people heading towards the town hall—on the grounds of the city holiday market. The spokesperson for the Saxony-Anhalt government, Matthias Schuppe, confirmed that a terrorist attack had occurred. The state authorities reported after 10 p.m. that two people were killed.

Eyewitnesses described scenes full of chaos and panic. "People started to flee in panic, the screams were unbearable," reports "Bild." The tragedy occurred at a time when the market was crowded, with hundreds of residents and tourists enjoying the festive atmosphere at the end of the working week.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz has already commented on the events in an official statement: "My thoughts are with the victims and their families. We stand with them and with the people of Magdeburg." Scholz also expressed gratitude towards the emergency services for their dedication during this dramatic situation.

Billionaire Elon Musk also commented on the tragic events, writing in response to the situation on platform X (formerly Twitter): "Scholz should resign immediately. Incompetent [person]."

Musk's post triggered a wave of criticism, especially given the seriousness of the situation in Magdeburg. Many found his words irresponsible and even provocative, particularly as Musk has recently been closely collaborating with Donald Trump and is known for his populist and nationalist rhetoric.

His comment is part of a broader set of actions aimed at criticising centre-left governments in Europe.

The spokesperson for the local government, Matthias Schuppe, emphasised that the authorities are treating the matter as a priority, and an investigation into the attack was started immediately. The motivations of the perpetrator have not yet been officially disclosed to the public. German media report that the car driver was detained on the scene, and investigators are examining his possible links to terrorist organisations.
