Washing machines are an integral part of our daily lives, yet few of us are aware that their interiors create ideal conditions for mould growth. The darkness and humidity inside the drum provide a perfect environment for microorganisms, which can lead to unpleasant odours.

The reason for mould problems in washing machines is usually neglecting regular cleaning. Just a little moisture is enough for unwanted deposits to start accumulating in the niches of the appliance, which, over time, transform into mould. How can you keep your washing machine clean and prevent mould and bad smells?

How to remove mould from the washing machine?

You don't need to invest in expensive chemicals to combat mould in your washer effectively. You can use items you already have at home.

How can you effectively clean mould from your washing machine? The first method is using vinegar and bicarbonate of soda. Pour about 90 grams of bicarbonate of soda directly into the drum, and pour about 240 millilitres of vinegar into the detergent drawer. Run the washing machine on the hottest setting. This programme will not only clean the inside of the machine but also remove lingering deposits, leaving the appliance smelling fresh.

When cleaning the washing machine, make sure to clean the detergent drawers thoroughly. How do you do this? One way is to place vinegar-soaked sponges in the drawers for about half an hour. This will dissolve the dirt, making the drawers easier to clean. This process is simple, and regular use makes it easier to keep the washer clean, preventing mould and unpleasant odours.

Regular maintenance is crucial to keep the washing machine clean for longer. After each wash, remnants of moisture and detergent can remain inside the machine — the main causes of mould. Therefore, don't forget the simple habit of leaving the door and drawer open after each use.

Once a month, run a wash cycle on the hottest setting with vinegar, without any load, to remove accumulated deposits. It's also a good idea to use special cleaning agents available in shops to prevent limescale buildup.
