Denmark's satirical 'purchase' of California mocks Trump
The Danes have humorously decided to respond to Donald Trump's comments regarding the USA's interest in acquiring Greenland. An online petition has appeared, allowing those who support the idea of Denmark "purchasing" California to sign. A fundraising campaign has been launched for this purpose.
"Have you ever looked at a map and thought, ‘You know what Denmark needs? More sunshine, palm trees, and roller skates.’ Well, we have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to make that dream a reality," wrote the authors of the petition, which has already been signed by over 200,000 people.
The document lists several "benefits" Denmark would gain from "buying" California. These include better weather, a secure supply of avocados, and technological dominance.
"Denmark will rename Disneyland to 'Hans Christian Andersenland'," the authors caution in a satirical tone.
The petition proposes that after raising a trillion pounds, "give or take a few billion," negotiations will be conducted by "the best negotiators - Lego executives and the cast of the Danish series 'Borgen'.
Trump wants to take over Greenland
Donald Trump stated that Greenland, a territory dependent on Denmark, should come under the control of the United States. He threatened to impose high tariffs on Denmark if the government in Copenhagen did not agree to sell Greenland. Trump also did not rule out using force to accomplish his "Arctic ambitions."
The Prime Minister of Greenland, Mute Egede, declared on Facebook that "Greenland belongs to Greenlanders, and their future and fight for independence is their own business". He also emphasised that Americans and Danes might have different opinions.
Meanwhile, the Prime Minister of Denmark, Mette Frederiksen, in a statement to Danish TV2, emphasised that Greenland’s aspirations for independence are understandable, but – as she reiterated – "the island is not for sale."
