The incident occurred in the second half's final seconds of added time. Real Madrid's right-back was clearing the ball from his team's penalty area when he collided with Villarreal player Yeremy Pino's thigh.
Carvajal then fell to the ground, screaming in agony. His teammates immediately gathered around him and called for medical assistance. Unable to leave the pitch independently, medics took him off on a stretcher. He was cheered off by the applause of the fans.
