Crimea wildfire crisis: Fires surge by 25% amid strong winds
Crimea is burning. On Wednesday evening, a fire broke out in Eupatoria in the western part of the peninsula. According to the occupying Russian services, dried vegetation caught fire. The fire consumed about 1,000 square metres. According to the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia for Crimea, the number of fires in the region increased by 25 percent.
"Information was received about the ignition of dry vegetation in an open area. Forces and assets from the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations were dispatched. Upon arrival, it was found that dry vegetation covering 200 square metres was burning," reads a statement from the Ministry of Emergency Situations.
As reported by local media, the fire broke out very quickly. Strong winds contributed to the blaze's spread, which only managed to be contained to 1,000 square metres. No one was hurt, and more than 30 firefighters were involved in extinguishing the fire.
Series of fires in Crimea
At the beginning of June, it was reported that the number of dry grass fires in Crimea is increasing. Local services warn that these fires spread quickly and are accompanied by much smoke. Since April 17, a special fire regime has been in effect throughout Crimea. Actions have been taken to prevent the spread of fires and reduce the risk of potential crises in the region.
"The increase in the number of fires in the Republic of Crimea is already over 25 percent. This year, there have already been about 1,600 fires, compared to 1,200 during the same period last year. This year, 37 people have already died in fires," said Colonel of the Internal Service Igor Skurtul.
