Clean your washing machine: Top DIY solutions to prevent mould
Regular cleaning of the washing machine is essential to maintain its efficiency and hygiene. Neglecting this task can lead to mould and unpleasant odours, which will be noticeable both in the appliance and on clothes.
The washing machine is a device that operates in homes every day. Although we often forget this, regular cleaning is crucial not only for its longevity but also for the quality of the wash. Neglecting this can cause mould and bacteria to settle in its nooks and crannies, resulting in unpleasant odours and reduced washing efficiency.
Home methods for cleaning the washing machine
To maintain the cleanliness of the washing machine, we don't need to resort to specialist chemicals. There are effective home methods that are easy to apply.
One such method is using lemon and toothpaste. Simply apply a bit of toothpaste onto half a lemon and place it into the drum of the washing machine. You can also rub toothpaste onto the door for an even better cleaning effect. Set the machine to 90 degrees Celsius. Limescale, residues, bacteria, and unpleasant smells will disappear in an instant.
Another trick involves vinegar and baking soda. Pour half a cup of soda into the drum and a cup of vinegar into the detergent drawer. Then run the washing machine at the highest temperature to neutralise bacteria and remove mineral deposits. After the washing cycle is complete, thoroughly wipe the seals with a mixture of water and vinegar.
Prevention and routine maintenance
The best way to avoid mould problems is through regular washing machine maintenance. It is important to leave the door open after each wash and remove clothes immediately once the cycle ends. It's also good practice to frequently clean the detergent drawer and filters to prevent the accumulation of dirt.
To neutralise unpleasant odours, it's worth running an empty wash cycle with the addition of half a pint of vinegar once a month. This will keep the washing machine clean.
