Cell phones and other electronic devices equipped with batteries need regular charging. However, doing so cautiously is advisable.

Many portable devices have batteries that need frequent charging. This has led many people to charge them overnight so they can use these devices the next morning without concerns about battery life. However, firefighters have long warned about the risks associated with this habit. They point out that electrical installation failures in homes and apartments are increasingly causing fires. Statistics reveal that one in every seven fires is caused by an electrical short circuit, often due to careless electricity usage and neglect of safety regulations.

What devices most often cause fires?

Among the devices most commonly linked to fires are kettles, coffee makers, phones, and smartphones. The latter are especially hazardous if charged at night and left near the bed or on bedding. The Fire Brigade recommends unplugging devices that don’t need continuous power when leaving home or going to bed. However, every piece of electronic equipment deserves attention, particularly since they often contain flammable materials like plastic. Thus, leaving them on wooden furniture can hasten the spread of a fire.

Why should electric scooters not be charged in apartments?

The fire risk has also increased with the rising interest in electric vehicles, such as electric scooters. There have been several instances where such devices caught fire. Before using such a vehicle, the Fire Brigade stresses the importance of familiarizing oneself with the operation manual, which offers details on operation, storage, and charging methods.

Karol Kierzkowski, the spokesperson for the Chief Commander of the State Fire Service, mentioned that manufacturers generally recommend against charging these devices in closed spaces. They advise charging in ventilated areas to prevent the buildup of harmful vapours and chemicals.

Why should you use only original chargers?

Another risk involves the use of non-original chargers. Often, manufacturers do not provide chargers with their devices, leading some customers to opt for cheaper, but potentially unsafe alternatives. These products seldom meet safety standards and are not thoroughly tested. Therefore, opting for a charger from a reputable manufacturer is a much safer choice.

In conclusion, the Fire Brigade constantly reminds us of the significance of using electronic devices safely. To reduce the risk of fire, it is vital to switch off those devices that don’t need constant power and to invest in safe chargers.
