Chaga, or inonotus obliquus, is a parasitic fungus. Its numerous health benefits have been recognised for centuries. What should you know about it?

What is chaga?

The inonotus used for medicinal purposes grows on birch trees. It can thrive on the tree trunk for up to 80 years. Its health-promoting effects were noted as far back as ancient times and it was commonly used in Chinese medicine. The International Society for Mushroom Science has acknowledged chaga as a valuable dietary supplement. It contains polyphenols, phytosterols, and numerous minerals and vitamins.

When does chaga help?

Chaga has versatile effects and has even earned nicknames such as the "mushroom of immortality" or the "vitality mushroom." It possesses anti-inflammatory, cleansing, and strengthening properties.

How chaga works:

  • enhances immunity and helps combat various pathogens,
  • stabilises blood sugar levels,
  • supports the cardiovascular system,
  • helps lower cholesterol levels,
  • has anti-cancer potential,
  • slows the ageing process,
  • alleviates stomach ailments.

How to prepare a chaga infusion?

Chaga is available in powdered form or as larger pieces. These can be used to prepare infusions, following the manufacturer's instructions. Chaga extracts are also available in capsules. This is an ideal solution for those seeking alternative ways to support their health. However, it is advisable to consult a doctor first, particularly for individuals with diabetes or those taking anticoagulant medication. Pregnant and breastfeeding women, as well as children, should not use this mushroom.
