Canadian citizenship backlash: Musk faces petition uproar
Elon Musk has upset Canadians. A petition to revoke his Canadian citizenship has amassed over 297,000 signatures in just a few days. The billionaire holds a Canadian passport because his mother was born in the city of Regina.
The petition to revoke Elon Musk's Canadian citizenship has garnered widespread support. In just a few days, it collected over 297,000 signatures (more than 126,000 in the first two days), and this is certainly not the final count. The document can be signed electronically on the Canadian parliament's website. The deadline for collecting signatures is 20th June this year.
The petition is addressed to the Prime Minister of Canada, and its author is the writer Qualii Reed. The initiative has been supported by Member of Parliament Charlie Angus.
Arguments for revoking citizenship
Elon Musk, born in Pretoria, South Africa, has a Canadian passport thanks to his mother, who hails from Regina. The billionaire has frustrated Canadian citizens for several reasons. The petition outlines four main arguments for revoking his citizenship.
The authors of the petition argue that Elon Musk has acted against Canada's national interests, using his wealth and influence to interfere in elections. They claim he is affiliated with a foreign government seeking to undermine Canadian sovereignty and stress the need to counter his alleged efforts.
Musk frustrated Canadians
Musk deleted a post on platform X in which he stated that "Canada is not a real country."
In January this year, in another post, he referred to the Prime Minister of Canada as a "girl."
Girl, you're not the governor of Canada anymore - wrote the billionaire.
Musk openly supported Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre, which led to additional controversy.
Revoking Canadian citizenship is a complex process and is only possible in exceptional circumstances, such as terrorist activities or espionage. Lawyers stress that effectively revoking citizenship is difficult. Charlie Angus, who supports the petition, highlights its symbolic significance. He also admitted that he didn't expect such support.
Angus reached out to Elections Canada to see if Musk is attempting to influence elections in Canada via platform X.
