American General Steven L. Basham believes that "Russia will not stop at Ukraine." Therefore, for Americans, deploying their troops in Europe and integrating with NATO allies are crucial. The Western defense industry is also expected to grow stronger.

75 years ago, the North Atlantic Treaty was signed in Washington. To commemorate this milestone, the American Foundation for the Defense of Democracies organized an event titled "Transatlantic Security 75 Years after NATO." Among the speakers was General Steven L. Basham, Deputy Commander of United States European Command.

Steven L. Basham discussed the ongoing Russian aggression in Ukraine and shared insights on American troops stationed across European countries.

"It's easy for an autocratic regime like Russia to accelerate their defense industrial base at the expense of its economy to continue its war in Ukraine, along with help from Iran and North Korea," stated Gen. Steven L. Basham.

However, Basham highlighted that the growth of the Western defence sector is also on the rise. "It will continue accelerating, surpassing Russia's capabilities," he remarked. He sees the ongoing attack on Ukraine as a chance for the United States to advance its industrial base.

"The defense of our nation starts well outside the borders of the United States. All [that Ukraine is] asking for is our continued unwavering, consistent, continuous support.[...] We've just got to stay that course," stated the Deputy Commander of United States European Command.

He also mentioned that Russia once took pride in being an arms exporter. Now, a significant portion of its equipment originates from China - hence Vladimir Putin is strengthening ties with them. Basham believes that Beijing - like Russia "poses a global threat".

"Russia will not stop at Ukraine"

The General is confident that the United States and its allies are growing stronger and effectively countering Russia's aggression. However, he is concerned that Russia may target other countries after Ukraine.

"Make no mistake. No matter how this ends in Ukraine, Russia will not stop with Ukraine unless they're stopped in Ukraine," emphasized Basham.

He noted that Finland and Sweden's recent accession to NATO was a significant move. This decision strengthened the alliance and enhanced security.

Moreover, the deployment of American troops in Europe and the USA's engagement in NATO are vital. ""You have to be with your allies to be able to integrate. You have to be with your allies to campaign, to exercise. And by the way, it can't be just episodic," conceded Gen. Steven L. Basham.
