Avoid this TikTok defrosting hack or risk a costly repair
As winter begins, specialists have an important reminder for drivers. They caution car owners against a window defrosting method that has gained significant popularity on TikTok.
Without a doubt, winter is not the favourite season for car enthusiasts. Early darkness, late sunrise, and slippery roads are just a few of the difficulties that drivers don't face during the summer. Additionally, there is the regular task of removing frost from the windows and clearing snow from the vehicle. These tasks can take several minutes.
Internet users from around the world support each other by sharing tricks that make everyday life easier. Undoubtedly, defrosting car windows is not a pleasant chore, hence the search for alternative methods to replace traditional scrapers. However, some methods require great caution.
American internet users suggested using a plastic bag for defrosting windows. To make the method effective, the bag should be partially filled with hot water. After stepping outside, simply press the bag against the window and move it along the surface. Some even resorted to pouring water directly from a kettle, claiming it saves time and energy. However, this is a huge mistake.
The method that can cost you dearly
Unfortunately, it turns out that this "brilliant" method is not ideal. The temperature difference between the hot water and the frozen window is over 37.8 degrees Celsius, which, according to experts, can lead to the window cracking. Such a situation can result in very high costs. Some shared their failures in TikTok videos, warning others against this solution.
Using water of any temperature to de-ice windscreens is not advised. Hot water will cause the glass to expand, which can result in it cracking or even shattering, and cold water can freeze on top of existing ice and frost. Both methods can damage your windscreen, sometimes beyond repair - said an expert in an interview with "The Express".
Dorry Potter also spoke in an interview with the British "The Express". This expert from National Scrap Car stated that the best way to avoid defrosting is to place a special cover on the windscreen. She also discouraged using unusual methods, like rubbing the window with a potato or an onion. Their effectiveness is practically nonexistent.
As temperatures drop the stress of heading out on time due to a frosty car is soon approaching, so it is important for motorists to make sure they are prepared ahead of time - Potter emphasised.
Importantly, windscreen covers are a very cheap and simple way to deal with frozen windows. You can find such accessories in popular stores for a few to a dozen or so pounds, and setting it up takes just a few seconds.
