An injury just before the Olympic Games is something that is often difficult to cope with. Australian field hockey player Matthew Dawson had no intention of breaking down because of it. He wanted so much to fly to Paris to perform in front of the fans that he decided the best course of action was to cut off a piece of his finger. Instead of treating the injury he sustained, he got rid of the problem. All to represent his country on the field in the capital of France.

Shocking news has reached us from Australia. It turned out that Matthew Dawson, a field hockey player, decided to cut off a piece of his finger. This was because of an injury that would have prevented him from flying to Paris and competing in the Olympic Games. It would have been devastating for him since he represented Australia in Tokyo and Rio de Janeiro. In the capital of Japan, he and his teammates won a silver medal.
- I made a conscious decision after consulting with a plastic surgeon. The decision was made not only for participation in the Olympic Games but also for my future life. My best solution was to cut off the upper part of my finger. Many other problems exist, and more important things happen in other people's lives than losing a finger, so I am very happy it is just a small piece of my finger - said Matthew Dawson in an interview with the media.
Field hockey coach Colin Batch told journalists that he is proud of his player. According to him, Dawson demonstrated how much he loves his country and how much he cares about the national team's performance.
