Dreaming of a unique hedge? Forget the overused arborvitae. Opt for a plant that grows even faster and is much easier to cultivate.

Arborvitae are popular coniferous plants that adorn many parks and gardens. They are large enough to protect the property from prying eyes a few years after planting. However, there is an alternative. It turns out that the cypress grows even faster. We explain how to take care of it.

Plant it instead of arborvitae. You won’t regret it

Arborvitae, also known as Thuja, is a plant from the cypress family. It originates from Asia, but it can be easily cultivated in our conditions. It doesn't require much work, so many people plant it in their gardens.

Few people realise that its shoots contain a toxic substance called thujone. It poses a threat to both humans and animals.

Thujone present in arborvitae is toxic and appears in two forms (alpha and beta). Both isomeric forms exhibit toxic effects and can lead to symptoms of poisoning in the nervous system. In acute cases, seizures may even occur.

What can replace arborvitae? The best choice is the cypress. It stands out with its intense, vivid green colour and dense shoots. It is resistant to low temperatures and pests. Properly cared for, it can reach up to 13 feet high.

How to care for a cypress?

The cypress is very easy to care for. It should be provided with a sunny location but can also handle partial shade. The shrub has no special soil requirements. It can be planted in sandy and clayey soil with a slightly acidic pH.

Due to its developed root system, it does not need frequent watering. Watering it during periods of severe drought is enough. It grows quickly, so when planting, keep at least 20 inches of spacing.

Frequent fertilisation is not necessary. The plant should be nourished only in spring, during intense growth. Both ready-made fertilisers and homemade ones, such as coffee grounds or yeast, will work. Use them once a month, and the cypress will repay you with a beautiful appearance.
