Recently, Aldi customers in Germany have faced situations where they had to leave without their purchases. One customer had an unfortunate experience, ultimately leaving the shop without her goods, a scenario that has befallen several others recently. The issue developed gradually, as detailed by the derwesten.de service.
Like many other retailers, Aldi in Germany offers a service for collecting online orders. Customers can order their favourite products online and collect them in-store, where they are ready for pick-up, as reported by the German service.
The pandemic is over, but the service remains
During the COVID-19 pandemic, these services gained immense popularity because they allowed contactless shopping. Even after the end of lockdowns, many people continue to utilise this option at Aldi and other stores, saving significant time by avoiding searching for goods themselves.
Problems with collection
Recently, however, Aldi has encountered issues with collecting ordered products. One customer shared her experience on Facebook, mentioning that she intended to pick up an order containing a rum cake, which required identity verification using a special terminal, as noted by the derwesten.de service.
The customer reported repeatedly attempting to enter her ID, but the system failed to recognise it. Despite numerous attempts, she could not log in.
She sought assistance from the store staff, who directed her to the online service, which could also not resolve the issue. She later learned that other customers had reported similar problems.
Aldi Süd's stance on age verification
Aldi Süd quickly addressed the situation by clarifying age verification procedures for purchasing alcohol and tobacco products. In a statement sent to the portal, the company emphasised that age verification is always required, regardless of the quantity or type of product bought. To collect age-restricted products, customers must confirm their age with an ID card or driving licence. Aldi Süd also reminds customers to follow the instructions at the collection point for proper identity document scanning, as failure may result in non-recognition.
