Zelensky urges Rubio to witness Russia's impact in Ukraine

The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, has invited U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio to visit Ukraine and witness firsthand the impact of Russian aggression. This invitation was a response to Rubio's suggestions about making concessions to achieve peace.

Zelensky stressed that Ukraine's historical heritage, currently under Russian attack, will never regain its original form. "Yes, it will be restored, but it will never be the same," he said, adding that Russia should be held financially accountable for the damage.

In mid-January, Marco Rubio outlined his diplomatic vision in the Senate, stating the need to end the war. "Now, what Vladimir Putin’s done is unacceptable, there’s no doubt about it. But this war has to end," Rubio declared. He noted that this would require "bold diplomacy" and concessions from both parties.

"Ukraine has gone back 100 years"

Rubio suggested that the previous U.S. administration had been misleading in implying that Ukraine could not only defeat Russia but also dismantle it. Ukraine has gone back 100 years, he mentioned, highlighting the damage to the country's energy system.

In response, Zelensky invited Rubio to Ukraine, hoping he would see the effects of Russian aggression himself. "I think he needs to see what Russia has done," Zelensky told the Associated Press.

Zelensky's invitation is more than just a diplomatic gesture; it is an attempt to draw attention to Ukraine's significant challenges. The President emphasises that rebuilding the nation will demand substantial financial resources and international support.
