Defecation is a natural process, but often, it's an incredibly awkward subject to broach. Constipation problems can stem from an unhealthy diet, inadequate fibre intake, and not allocating enough time to physical activity.

Harvard gastroenterologist, Dr. Sethi, has highlighted another factor that can contribute to lengthy bathroom visits. He points a finger at western toilets as potential proponents of defecation issues.

Constipation could be linked to toilet design

Dr. Sethi decided to take to social media to share this observation. Highlighting on TikTok, he pointed out stark differences between western and eastern toilet designs. He analysed that western options could complicate the defecation process due to the semi-bent hip and thigh position users adopt.

"This may necessitate more effort and potentially lead to increased constipation and ultimately haemorrhoids and fissures," explained Dr. Sethi.

Dr. Sethi noted that eastern toilets "promote a squatting position, which aligns the rectum for easier stool passage".

How can we overcome the issue of constipation?

However, Dr. Sethi also acknowledged that conventional toilets could be a suitable option for individuals with joint issues or the elderly. In his video, he suggested a complete bathroom renovation is by no means necessary. To expedite the defecation process and make it less painful, investing in a special stool could be beneficial.

Many internet users remarked about the eastern toilet model they often encountered during their travels. Most found it uncomfortable: "Since I started using that type of toilet, I've experienced knee problems", "Eastern toilets are too hard on my joints". However, several others conveyed in the comments their intention to definitely invest in a stool.
