Watercress is one of the oldest vegetables

It is no secret that vegetables and fruit are a source of many vitamins and nutrients. They should be an integral part of a healthy diet, and nutritionists remind us that a portion of vegetables or fruit should be added to almost every meal.

One exceptional vegetable that should be included in the diet is watercress. American scientists from the Department of Health and Human Services have deemed it the healthiest in the world. It is one of the oldest vegetables used as medicinal herbs and food.

Watercress contains many vitamins, including K, C, A, and B vitamins (including folic acid). It also contains many minerals, including iron, calcium, magnesium, potassium, and phosphorus, as well as antioxidants, glucosinolates, lutein, zeaxanthin, and beta-carotene. Additionally, it contains fibre and proteins.

Watercress - why is it worth eating?

The fibre in this vegetable aids digestion and improves bowel function. Compounds found in watercress have anti-inflammatory effects. Moreover, potassium, antioxidants, and magnesium can lower blood pressure and support the cardiovascular system. It's an excellent vegetable for the digestive system and the entire body.

Meanwhile, vitamin A is crucial for the eyes, helping us avoid vision problems. On the other hand, vitamin K supports the bones and prevents osteoporosis. Antioxidants and glucosinolates detoxify the body, neutralise harmful substances, and support the liver.

How can you use watercress? This vegetable is an excellent addition to sandwiches and dinner sauces and also works great in cocktails and smoothies. Its abundance of vitamins and minerals should encourage us to include it in our daily diet.
