US halts military shipments to Ukraine but maintains satellite aid
The United States has halted deliveries of military equipment to Ukraine. However, they continue to provide intelligence and satellite support.
The United States has decided to suspend the shipment of military equipment to Ukraine. Nevertheless, intelligence, satellite support, and communication services remain uninterrupted.
A Pentagon source emphasized that the United States continues to supply Ukraine with intelligence, satellite imagery, and access to the Starlink communication system. The source warned that any disruption in this support would have an immediate and significant impact on Ukrainian forces at the front lines.
Intelligence and satellite support: Ukraine still has it from the USA
The decision to suspend support concerns a substantial amount of equipment intended for Ukraine. President Trump has not approved any new weapons package for Ukraine, but up until Monday, he had allowed the passage of weapons under previous packages announced by Joe Biden.
In December 2024 and January 2025, President Biden announced the procurement of equipment packages for Ukraine, valued at approximately £1.4 billion and £1 billion, respectively. About one-third of the weapons from the Presidential Drawdown Authority (PDA) packages have been delivered, and further consignments could take several months.
It remains unclear whether the pause affects the USAI programme, through which Ukraine was to receive most of the ammunition for air defence systems. Once the contract for weapon purchase is signed, it becomes Ukraine’s property, but authorities can use legal measures to reroute or adjust the deliveries.
Last year, the Biden administration prioritised the delivery of Patriot missiles to Ukraine, at the expense of other orders. The completion of these contracts generally takes many months.
