Its frost-resistant species thrive well in our moderate climate. It's worth noting that lavender's allure is not only superficial; significant health benefits match its beauty and fragrance. For instance, it can be utilized to combat insomnia, thanks to its calming effect. It also offers analgesic, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and regenerative properties. Lavender's role in cosmetics is also significant. Despite this great versatility, the plant is not particularly demanding, although proper care is crucial. Regular pruning plays a pivotal role in its care. So, when's the best time to do the first pruning after winter?

What types of lavender grow in Poland?

The varieties most popular in our country include English lavender (Lavandula angustifolia), French lavender (Lavandula stoechas), Lavandin (Lavandula x intermedia), and Fernleaf lavender (Lavandula multifida). Of these, the most popular species is English lavender. Its flowering stage usually comes in July and August. In Poland, these plants can grow to a height of around 80cm (rounded to nearest cm). Lavender fields specifically created for photo sessions are becoming increasingly prevalent in our country.

When to prune lavender in the spring?

Experts assert that regular and skilfully executed pruning will make the lavender plant bushier and denser whilst encouraging renewed blooming. Pruning should take place yearly, ideally twice a year. Regular pruning rejuvenates the plant, prevents stems from becoming woody and enhances the overall appearance and shape. The timing of the first pruning is crucial; it should take place immediately after winter, from the latter part of March to early April. A sunny, dry day is the optimal condition. The second round of pruning is best conducted after the summer blooming period.

How to carry out the first pruning of lavender?

Remember that only non-woody stems are to be pruned annually. Selected branches should be cut by about a third of their length, mindful to cut just above the leafless part of the stem. Avoid pruning woody stems. It's also essential that young bushes are pruned in their first year, with young stems trimmed by half of their length. Spring pruning should definitely be completed before the blooming period begins.
