The secret to a spectacular lawn lies in the correct approach and meticulous planning of maintenance tasks. A major one needs to be performed right away. What is it we're hinting at?

Throughout the warmer months, the key to a stunning lawn involves focusing on its fertilisation, irrigation, and regular mowing. A worthwhile technique to try out is mulching, which entails leaving a thin residual layer of grass after mowing. Consequently, we supply the soil with vital nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, thereby also limiting weed proliferation.

How to undertake lawn care as early as February?

Lawn maintenance can actually begin even before the arrival of the warm days. What's required to ensure its robust growth? Bear in mind this task needs to be performed even before the onset of the grass growth season, generally around late February to mid-March. This is the ideal period for liming. The next opportunity for this won't be until autumn, typically in October and the first half of November.

How to lime the lawn effectively?

Liming is a procedure that includes distributing calcium carbonate fertiliser. It is crucial to tailor the quantity of fertiliser to the quality of the soil, something which the instructions on the pack can help with. If feasible, it is advised to test the acidity level of the soil ahead of starting the procedure. A pH value below 5.5 is a sign that liming is needed, which can be determined using a basic strip pH meter.

We must also avoid over-liming, as carrying out this procedure once every three years is usually sufficient. Simply scatter the fertiliser on the grass and remember to lightly rake it in. It's also important to wait at least a month after liming prior to employing any other fertilisation methods or means.

What outcomes can we anticipate from meticulously conducted liming?

This process results in an elevation in soil pH, which has a direct impact on its quality. A slightly acidic soil will adsorb nutrients from fertilisers more efficiently. The grass will benefit from these nutrients. Consequently, the lawn will be fortified, it will grow more speedily, the blades will toughen up, and the hue will become more vivid.
