Ukrainian forces apprehend Russian mercenaries in Sudan in anti-insurgency mission
"We are on the good side. We are protecting not just Ukraine, but also Sudan's legitimate government," Ukrainian military member Ihor Czeczerynda commented, reacting to the Kyiv Post publication that included a video of the detained mercenaries' interrogation from Sudan by the Ukrainian military intelligence special unit (HUR).

In the video, one of the detainees speaks in Russian, affirming his affiliation with the so-called Wagner Group. He alleges that the mercenaries' mission was to topple the Sudanese authorities, adding that their group comprises around a hundred members.
Two men, likely locally recruited mercenaries, are also questioned while blindfolded and on their knees. One of them mentions that their pay is a thousand dollars.
Operations of Ukrainian forces in Sudan
The video also features Ukrainian forces examining a military truck that contains the bodies of Russian mercenaries. The vehicle shows signs of extensive gunfire. Through the front windscreen, the body of a soldier adorned with a "Wagner Group" badge can be seen - as reported by Kyiv Post.
The news source reported that the Ukrainian special forces have been carrying out operations in Sudan for several months. Earlier, it had shared footage which, it claimed, showed Ukrainian drones destroying "Russian mercenaries" and their supporters in Sudan.
The Kyiv Post recalled Kyrylo Budanow, head of the HUR, promising in May of the previous year to "eliminate Russian war criminals wherever they are in the world". Actions in Sudan are seen as part of this mission.
