Ukraine tests new 'Trident' laser weapon comparable to West's

Ukrainians are testing a new laser weapon. Trident, as it is called, is equivalent to the British DragonFire system, writes the Ukrainian portal Defense Express.

The Ukrainian laser weapon Trident is currently being tested by the newly formed unmanned systems forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. As reported by Defense Express, the commander of these forces, Vadim Sucharewski, emphasised that Ukraine is one of five countries in the world that possess such technology. This weapon is capable of shooting down aircraft at altitudes over 1,600 metres.

Ukrainian laser compared to competing weapons

Comparing Trident to other systems, such as the American AN/SEQ-3 (LaWS) or the British DragonFire, it can be noted that the Ukrainian weapon has similar parameters. The effective range is 1,600 metres, which suggests a laser power of at least 50 kilowatts. This achievement is significant, considering that other systems with similar power operate at similar distances.

Vadim Sucharewski noted that Trident is in the development and enhancement phase. Currently, it is a prototype, but it already shows impressive capabilities. This weapon could be crucial in the future, especially in defence against drones and other aerial threats.

Meant to hit aircraft at several kilometres high

As stated, the Ukrainian Trident is meant to hit aircraft flying at altitudes of up to 1,600 metres. Defense Express also notes that Ukrainians ensured the laser could hit aircraft moving at speeds up to 200 kilometres per hour.

The Ukrainian armed forces are not disclosing details related to the weapon's production; however, the laser is "on the right track for scaling and strengthening." This suggests that Trident is still a prototype, but "if even the prototype shows such parameters, then such development is truly more than interesting," reads Defense Express.
