Trump seeks dialogue revival with North Korea amid global tensions
Reuters reports that Donald Trump's team plans to resume direct talks with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. The purpose of these talks remains unclear.
According to sources cited by Reuters, resuming contacts between Trump and Kim could reduce the risk of military confrontation and restore communication channels. However, specific political goals or timelines for potential progress have not yet been established.
Reuters' sources admit that negotiations with Pyongyang may take a back seat due to more pressing conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine.
Trump boasted about his relationship with Kim
During the election campaign, Trump frequently highlighted his strong relations with the North Korean leader, claiming that it is "a good thing, not a bad thing." He also criticised President Joe Biden for not meeting with Kim, although the White House expressed a willingness to talk without preconditions.
Trump was the first US president since Bill Clinton to meet with the North Korean leader. He held three meetings with him: in Hanoi, Singapore, and in the demilitarised zone separating the two Koreas. Despite exchanging letters, which Trump called "love letters," these contacts did not produce concrete results, and North Korea continued to develop its missile and nuclear programmes.
One of the organisers of the Trump-Kim summits was State Department official Alex Wong, who was appointed Deputy National Security Advisor of the USA.
Reuters notes that Pyongyang's media have not yet mentioned Trump's election victory, and Kim Jong Un accused the USA of increasing tensions and the risk of nuclear war.
