For the first time, Trump withdrew the USA from the agreement in 2017. Joe Biden's administration later reversed his decision. Now, Trump has once again chosen to take this step.

- The United States notified the Secretary-General, in his capacity as depositary, of its withdrawal on 27 January 2025 from the Paris Agreement of 12 December 2015, according to UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric. The withdrawal will take effect on 27th January 2026.

Dujarric emphasised that the UN remains committed to achieving the Paris Agreement's goals, including limiting global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

What does the Paris climate agreement entail?

The Paris Agreement requires signatory countries to present new and more ambitious plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions every five years. According to the agreement, the latest plans must be submitted by February next year.

The Paris Agreement came into force on 4th November 2016, when the condition of its ratification by at least 55 countries responsible for at least 55% of global greenhouse gas emissions was met.
