Trump expands Guantanamo for criminal migrants under new law
The President of the USA, Donald Trump, announced his decision to establish a detention centre for dangerous criminal migrants at the military base in Guantanamo, Cuba. He also signed a law mandating the detention of all immigrants accused of crimes by federal authorities.
During the signing ceremony, Donald Trump instructed the Pentagon and the Department of Homeland Security to construct a centre for migrants that will accommodate 30,000 people. The President emphasised that Guantanamo is a place from which it is difficult to escape, ensuring the safety of Americans.
-Some of them are so bad, we don’t even trust other countries to hold them, and we don’t want them coming back, so we’re going to send them out to Guantánamo - Trump stated. He said the move would "double our capacity immediately," adding that Guantánamo was a "tough place to get out of."
Since 2002, the Guantanamo base has been used as a detention site for people suspected of terrorism. Previously, it was a centre for migrants, mainly Cuban and Haitian refugees. The legality of these centres was questioned.
Controversies surrounding the Laken Riley Act
Trump also signed the Laken Riley Act, a law named in honour of a student murdered by an illegal immigrant. The new law imposes an obligation to detain all immigrants accused of crimes, which raises legal controversies and concerns among immigration communities.
"WP": Trump deported 200 Colombians, none of whom were criminals
Among the 200 immigrants from Colombia deported on Tuesday by the decision of President Donald Trump, there were 20 children and two pregnant women, but no criminals - reported the "Washington Post" ("WP") on Wednesday, citing information from Colombian officials.
White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt told reporters on Tuesday that the administration considers all immigrants illegally residing in the USA as criminals. "It’s a big culture shift in our nation to view someone who breaks our immigration laws as a criminal, but that’s exactly what they are. If they broke our nation’s laws, yes, they are a criminal" - she said.
