Trump blunders: Labels Spain as a BRICS nation in error
Donald Trump officially began his presidency in the USA. After his inauguration, the politician signed several urgent decrees. During this task, Trump made a significant blunder. The new occupant of the White House included Spain in the BRICS countries.
Donald Trump was sworn in as President of the USA on Monday, 20th January. The politician delivered a speech focusing mainly on the country's internal policies. He announced the deportation of illegal immigrants, tightening the border, increasing oil and gas extraction, moving away from the Green New Deal, and recognising only two genders.
Trump then went to the Oval Office, where he signed a large number of documents. Among them was the declaration of a state of emergency on the southern border of the United States and the suspension of accepting refugees and asylum seekers.
Trump's huge blunder. He said this about Spain
Donald Trump has just started his presidency, and he has already made a notable mistake. One of the recordings online shows his brief exchange with one of his collaborators. Trump states that Spain is part of BRICS. "They are BRICS nation. Do you know what a BRICS nation is? You will figure it out," said the US President.
BRICS is a group of economically cooperating countries. Among its founders are Russia, China, Brazil, and India. In 2011, South Africa joined them. BRICS aims to build a new economic system that is competitive with Western countries. Some of its proposals concern creating a new currency alternative to the dollar. The community also wants UN reform. This bloc aims to attract countries of the so-called global south, meaning developing countries in Asia, Africa, and South America.
In recent years, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates have joined BRICS. Argentina was also supposed to join the bloc, but ultimately this decision was revised. On 1st January 2025, Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda, and Uzbekistan became partner countries of BRICS. Spain is not a member of this union, and there is no indication that it will be soon.
