Trump's geographical shake-up: Iconic US landmarks renamed

The initial decisions made by Donald Trump following his inauguration have been unexpected. The American president ordered the change of the name of the highest peak in the USA. Mount McKinley has made a comeback after 10 years, which was known as Denali until a few days ago. Similarly, the Gulf of Mexico has become a thing of the past. From now on, it is referred to as the American Gulf.

Donald Trump became the 47th president of the United States yesterday. The Republican has already made his initial decisions, with some focusing on geography. The American leader has altered the names of several iconic landmarks on the USA map.

After a decade, Trump has changed the name of the highest peak in the United States. Denali has once again become Mount McKinley. The massif, which measures approximately 6,200 metres above sea level, was named in honour of Republican president William McKinley from 1896 to 2015.

On 28 August 2015, the U.S. Secretary of the Department of the Interior, Sally Jewell, reinstated the mountain's original name: Denali. This word originates from the term 'deenaalee', which in the language of the indigenous tribes of North America means "great." Yesterday, Trump declared that this name no longer applies.

The Gulf of Mexico has become history. Now it's the Gulf of America

Donald Trump went a step further by deciding that as of 20 January 2025, the Gulf of Mexico would disappear from the map of the United States. Now, Americans must familiarise themselves with the new name: the American Gulf.

These changes to the names of the highest peak in North America and the gulf located near the coasts of the USA, Mexico, and Cuba are not entirely unforeseen. Donald Trump announced this during his election campaign and before his inauguration.

In addition to renaming the mountain and the gulf, Trump also discussed possibly taking control of Greenland and the Panama Canal. He addressed the latter topic during his inaugural speech as the President of the USA.
