This tragic event occurred on Friday, 11 October, in the town of Villarreal, situated on the eastern coast of Spain, north of Valencia. According to the Spanish newspaper "Mediterraneo", the woman was on her way to the emergency room after being bitten by the hamster, which was a family pet.

She was accompanied by her two children, aged seven and eleven. Unfortunately, she fainted just before reaching the hospital. Despite immediate resuscitation efforts by medical personnel, they were unable to save her.

Following the incident, the police secured the area where the body was found, and the local court launched an investigation into the cause of death.

An autopsy has now been conducted. The results may provide insight into the cause of death, although such reports are typically not made public in Spain.

Although extremely rare, incidents like this remind us that a hamster bite can potentially lead to serious health consequences. Though this is very uncommon, rodents can carry diseases, such as rabies or bacterial infections.

Experts recommend that if bitten by an animal, the wound should be thoroughly cleaned to minimise the risk of infection. In the past, there have been cases of individuals experiencing severe allergic reactions to bites, characterised by breathing difficulties, which could necessitate hospitalisation. In this instance, it may have been an anaphylactic shock, but conclusions have yet to be reached.
