The girl's family began searching for her when she did not return home after Monday's classes. Eventually, her grandmother found her injured in the school's audiovisual room, according to a representative from the education office in the city of Daejeon.

The 7-year-old, with stab wounds to her neck and face, was taken to hospital. Unfortunately, as Reuters reports, she suffered cardiac arrest. Doctors were unable to save the child.

Investigation into the tragedy

Police confirmed that the teacher admitted to stabbing the pupil. However, it is unclear if there were any prior relations between them. It was noted that the woman took medical leave at the end of last year but returned to work before completing it. After the attack on the child, the teacher attempted self-injury and was taken to hospital, where she remains.

The acting President of South Korea, Choi Sang-mok, expressed condolences to the family and instructed the Ministry of Education and relevant services to thoroughly investigate this tragic matter. He called for the implementation of preventive measures, emphasising that "schools must be the safest place for children."

In front of the school where the tragedy occurred, moved residents laid flowers and stuffed animals.
