Many homemakers are proud of their homemade preserves. Jars filled with pickles, fruit products, and various delightful items in vinegar brine can be found in many homes. Pantries often hide little secrets, and I stumbled upon one. Green balls left me puzzled.

The mystery of the green, strange balls solved

The association with small pickles in brine arose due to the shape of the products—slightly rounded but elongated at the ends. They were also very similar in colour to pickles. However, I saw ground red pepper in the jar, so I thought it might be some olives—yet the shape and size didn't match. Exhausting my culinary imagination, I asked my mother-in-law what exciting thing she had put in the jars. It turned out they were pickled pear tomatoes. Another name for them is tear tomatoes—referencing their rounded shape.

How to make pickled pear tomatoes

As my mother-in-law suggested, the best ones are green pear tomatoes. You can also find yellow or red ones, but the green variety is ideal for this recipe.

Ingredients:

  • 450 grams of pear tomatoes,
  • 120 millilitres of 6% vinegar,
  • 160 millilitres of water,
  • 20 grams of sugar,
  • 7.5 grams of salt,
  • 5 grams of sweet paprika powder,
  • a few peppercorns.

Preparation:

  1. Wash the tomatoes and place them in sterilised, dried jars.
  2. Prepare the brine from the ingredients, then pour it into the jars while still hot.
  3. Seal well, place the jars in a pot with the tops sticking out, boil, and let sit for 10 minutes.
  4. Remove the jars and place them upside down. Store in the pantry.
