Shortly after 18:00, a driver drove a car into a group of people at the Christmas market in Magdeburg, the capital of the federal state of Saxony-Anhalt, German media reports. Government spokesman Matthias Schuppe confirmed that an attack had taken place.

Driver ploughs into crowd at Christmas market

According to eyewitness accounts, the driver of a dark BMW ploughed into a crowd of people heading towards the town hall. People began to flee in panic, as reported by "Bild".

Shocking footage circulating on social media depicts a car speeding with high velocity down one of the market's crowded alleyways directly into the crowd. It doesn't stop and continues to drive over more people. Due to the violent nature of the incident, we will not be publishing the videos on our pages.

There are reports of dozens of victims from Friday's attack in Magdeburg on the Elbe, including fatalities. However, the exact number of victims has not yet been officially confirmed, and operations at the scene are still ongoing.

The German press agency DPA has reported that the police have apprehended the perpetrator.

According to information from "Bild", the market area has been cordoned off, and officers are searching for explosives.

More information will be provided shortly.
