The spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ismail Baghaei, "rejects allegations that Iran is implicated in an assassination attempt targeting former or current American officials," according to a statement issued by Iranian diplomats.
On Friday, the US Department of Justice disclosed that in the week before the elections, the FBI had foiled an Iranian plot against Donald Trump.
They were counting on Trump’s defeat
According to intelligence service sources, in September, an unnamed officer of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard tasked a man named Farhad Shaheri with tracking and then targeting the Republican Party's presidential candidate.
The person who issued the order was convinced that Trump would lose the election and stated that if it could not be carried out before the election, it should be completed afterwards when the security measures for the (defeated) candidate would likely be less stringent.
Iran International reports that Shakeri is most likely in Iran. At the same time, two of his accomplices, accused of preparing an assassination attempt on an Iranian opposition journalist residing in the USA, are currently held in a New York prison.
