Black mould on bathroom silicone is a well-known issue. When you spot it, it's important to take action promptly, as this is the only way to prevent it from spreading further and to make your bathroom safer and more hygienic.

Where does mould come from?

Where does this mould originate? In short, mould appears due to excessive moisture, often found in bathrooms. Insufficient ventilation encourages the formation of black spots on the silicone, for example, under the shower or around the sink. Additionally, mould can develop where the silicone becomes unsealed.

Water getting under the seal creates an ideal environment for mould, which grows from underneath. Regardless of its origin, it's good to know how to effectively remove it to avoid health problems.

A simple trick to remove mould in the bathroom

One might think that removing mould requires strong chemical agents, like bleach. However, this is not true. There are home methods that are safer for your health and the environment. You can use products you likely already have in your kitchen to remove mould.

Vinegar. Simply mix vinegar with water in a 1:1 ratio, spray the affected areas, and wait about 15 minutes. Then, wipe the silicone with a damp cloth.

Baking soda or bicarbonate of soda. Add a little water or tea tree oil to create a thick paste. Apply it to the mould, wait 15-20 minutes, and then scrub the seal with an old toothbrush.

Lemon juice. Use it in the same way as the vinegar-water mixture.

If none of the above products is available, try another home method. Use toothpaste, preferably whitening with activated charcoal. Apply it to the silicone joints, wait 15 minutes, and then scrub with a toothbrush. The task should proceed smoothly and effectively clean the seals.
