Sydney Sweeney underwent a remarkable transformation to prepare for her role as Christy Martin in an upcoming biographical film directed by David Michôd, which chronicles the life of the renowned American boxer. During filming in North Carolina, the 27-year-old was nearly unrecognisable. Famous for her blonde locks, the actress adopted a new look with a short mullet hairstyle, donning a dark wig fastened with a blue bandana, dramatically altering her usual appearance.
Sydney Sweeney's bold transformation
Sweeney, who recently garnered attention with her performance in "Anyone but You", concealed her figure in loose-fitting trousers, a beige T-shirt, and an oversized zip-up hoodie. On set, she sported white trainers and appeared – it seems – without makeup, perfectly embodying the realistic look of her character.
Sweeney's wardrobe in the film, which predominantly features sportswear from the '90s, marks a significant departure from the more sensual image she’s known for in her previous roles. Christy Martin, whose story the film explores, became a prominent figure in American women’s boxing during the '90s, captivating fans with her skill and charisma.
However, Martin faced personal struggles, including a tumultuous relationship with Jim Martin, her manager and later husband. In 2010, Jim brutally attacked Christy, stabbing and shooting her. She miraculously survived these traumatic events and has chosen to share her experience, hoping the film will raise awareness about domestic violence. "In a few years, fathers will watch this film with their daughters, discussing domestic violenceI think (...) fathers will watch with their daughters to make them aware of domestic violence," Martin stated in an interview with TMZ.com.
Originally from a small town in West Virginia, Martin made her mark on the sports world by challenging gender stereotypes and ascending to the top echelons of women’s boxing. She has also promised to assist Sweeney in her training, particularly in honing her left hook. However, the actress is not starting from scratch, as she has prior experience in kickboxing. "I’ve been itching to get back into the ring, train, and transform my body," said the actress. "Christy’s story isn’t a light one, it’s physically and emotionally demanding, there’s a lot of weight to carry. But I love challenging myself," she added. "I’m passionate about the fighting world, Christy’s story shines a light on her incredible rise to the top while showing the struggles of fame behind the curtains. I feel compelled to tell a story about a woman who faced so much adversity and didn’t allow it to defeat her. It’s powerful, and emotional," Sweeney remarked.
