State of emergency in Kursk as Ukrainian forces press on
A state of emergency was declared in the Kursk region on Wednesday, 7 August. The region's acting governor, Alexey Smirnov, announced this on his Telegram channel.

The information appeared on the second day of the Ukrainian forces' attack on the territory of the Kursk region, which is located near the Ukrainian border.
The Russian agency TASS reported that fighting is ongoing at the border with the use of helicopters.

Earlier on Wednesday, Smirnov reported a missile threat. He said that several thousand people were evacuated from the border region, all mass gatherings were cancelled, and blood donation drives were being organised.
Despite this, he added that "the situation in the region is under control," according to the Lithuanian broadcaster LRT on its portal.
