Spring Gardening: How to Avoid Unwanted Hornet Guests
Spring is the time when nature comes alive again. With the arrival of spring, we see green landscapes, blooming plants and the emergence of various insects and bugs. While some encounters with them can be unpleasant, sometimes we unintentionally attract hornets to our gardens.
As winter ends and the warmer days of spring approaches, it's a perfect time to start gardening. Although spring arrived in our country a while ago, it's only now that we can enjoy truly pleasant weather. May is ideal for organising barbecues and encourages us to take up gardening. However, before deciding to plant certain species of trees or shrubs, it's crucial to ensure they won't attract dangerous insects.
Hornets are drawn to specific types of trees and plants. Before planting a particular seedling in our garden, finding out which plants are best avoided is worth it.
Plants that attract hornets
Lilacs are like magnets to insects. The sweet nectar inside the stems primarily attracts hornets, which try to get to it with their mandibles, often harming the lilac bushes. Therefore, planting lilacs in the garden poses a risk of encountering hornets and damaging the bushes.
Fruit trees such as apples and pears also draw hornets. These insects similarly damage branches and fruit due to their interaction with lilacs. For this reason, planting plums, pears, or cherries close to balconies and windows is not advised. Such a decision could lead to not only hornets but also wasps being attracted to our trees in the summer, which may enter our homes.
What plants effectively repel insects?
Knowing which plants repel hornets is also beneficial. Planting garlic, wormwood, and lavender around the terrace or garden bench keeps these insects away due to their scent. Arranging pelargoniums and pansies on the balcony or garden is also a good idea. These plants not only beautify the space but also protect it from insects.
How else to repel hornets?
Many scents and products effectively repel hornets and other similar insects. These include clove oil and white vinegar, among others. It's also vital not to leave uncovered containers with food or sweet drinks outside, as these attract insects. Additionally, installing screens on doors and windows can help prevent insects from entering the house.
