Ironing a shirt can be daunting, particularly when you're pressed for time. However, there are effective methods that not only make this task easier but also save precious time. Discover a few tips that will transform ironing from a burdensome chore to a pleasurable activity.

How to iron shirts?

Before ironing a shirt, it’s essential to check the label — most fabrics have specific temperature guidelines. Cotton is best ironed at around 150°C, while silk and synthetics are suitable at about 120°C. Linen requires the highest temperature, reaching 180°C. It’s crucial to know the type of material to avoid unpleasant surprises like scorching.

To make shirt ironing easier, remember to moisten the fabric. Ideally, start ironing right after washing when it’s not completely dry. If that's not feasible, lightly dampen the shirt with water from a spray bottle. This will make the fabric more responsive to the iron, significantly reducing the ironing time.

How should you iron a shirt? The traditional method involves beginning with the smallest parts. Start with the collar. Lay it flat on the board and iron from the corners to the centre to avoid future wrinkling. Next, proceed to the cuffs, spreading them wide — creases in this area can detract from the overall appearance.

For the sleeves, fold them along the seams —any creases will be less noticeable. Lastly, tackle the larger parts of the shirt, such as the front and back. Start with the back and finish with the front, gently smoothing out the entire surface.

How to speed up shirt ironing?

Ironing needn't be time-consuming. You can greatly accelerate it by using a trick with aluminium foil. Line the ironing board with foil, shiny side up, and then place the cover on top. The heat reflected by the foil will smooth the shirts on both sides, reducing ironing time.

Another excellent method to ease ironing is to use lemon juice added to the water in the iron. Besides imparting a pleasant scent, lemon juice acts as a natural softener, helping to smooth out creases. This simple yet little-known trick can work wonders.

What mistakes to avoid while ironing?

While ironing a shirt, several common mistakes can ruin the overall effect. Avoid using too high a temperature, as it can damage the fabric or leave an unsightly shine. Particularly for delicate materials like silk or viscose, precise control of the iron's settings is crucial for maintaining their quality and appearance.

Pay attention to technique when ironing small elements. The collar and cuffs should be ironed meticulously to avoid creases.

A common mistake is ironing fabric that is too dry. Moistening the shirt beforehand can significantly ease the process and prevent new creases from forming. With these simple methods, ironing a shirt will not only become easier but also more effective.
