Scholz faces defeat as Bundestag vote triggers early election
On Monday, the Bundestag did not grant Chancellor Olaf Scholz a vote of confidence, paving the way for early parliamentary elections in Germany.

In a nominal vote, 349 deputies rejected the motion for a vote of confidence, 207 supported the chancellor, and 116 parliamentarians abstained.
Scholz announced that he would immediately ask the German President, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, to dissolve the Bundestag. The head of state has until 6th January to make a decision.
Steinmeier had previously signalled his readiness to end the parliament's term early. The accelerated elections are scheduled for 23rd February, seven months ahead of the original date.
