Scholz breaks silence with Putin in pivotal phone call
The Kremlin spokesman referred to the conversation between Vladimir Putin and Olaf Scholz: "As far as I know it was quite a businesslike conversation, detailed and quite frank, as the sides laid out their positions mutually," he said on a propaganda programme on Russian television, Russia 1.
Many reports provided by Russian media or government officials are elements of propaganda. Such reports are part of the information war conducted by the Russian Federation.
Dmitry Peskov was asked on propaganda television why the conversation happened now and whether the internal situation in Germany had any influence on it.
"Of course, all elements probably come together in such a way that there is political will to resume dialogue. In this case, it can only be welcomed, especially since President Putin has repeatedly said he is open to dialogue," Peskov emphasised.
Scholz talked with Putin
On Friday, for the first time in nearly two years, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz spoke with Vladimir Putin. The last contact between the two politicians took place in December 2022. The German government spokesman, Steffen Hebestreit, relayed this information.
The government spokesman in Berlin, Steffen Hebestreit, reported that Scholz, in his conversation with Putin, insisted that Russia be ready for talks with Ukraine to negotiate a lasting, just peace.
Hebestreit emphasised that Scholz spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Wednesday and intends to contact him again after the conversation with Putin.
