Scholz backs German defence spending reform amid NATO goals

During the Munich Security Conference, Chancellor Olaf Scholz emphasised that Germany is ready for a reform of the Stability and Growth Pact. This reform would involve excluding defence investments exceeding NATO's target of 2% of GDP from budgetary discipline. Scholz noted that "Germany is ready for this."

The Chancellor assured that Germany will support Ukraine as long as necessary. He pointed out that in order to secure adequate resources for the future, it is essential to loosen budgetary discipline.

Scholz also criticised the earlier speech by US Vice President J.D. Vance, accusing him of interfering in Germany's internal affairs. "We do not accept this," he said.

Scholz emphasised that the stakes are peace and security of the Old Continent, so Europe must act. Germany, as one of the key players on the continent, is ready to take steps towards increasing defence investments, which aim to strengthen security in the region.
