Europe must ensure Russia's threat ends, says Costa
Antonio Costa, President of the European Council, believes that concessions before peace negotiations concerning Ukraine are unacceptable. This stance was conveyed during the Munich Security Conference.
Addressing attendees at the Bayerischer Hof hotel in Munich, the President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, spoke on Saturday. The politician emphasised that concessions before peace negotiations regarding Ukraine are not acceptable.
Costa stressed that only Ukraine can determine when the conditions for talks with Russia will be appropriate. He added, "Therefore, we will continue to stand shoulder to shoulder with Ukraine."
Costa: the Russian threat extends beyond Ukraine
Costa pointed out that the threat from Russia is not limited to Ukraine alone. Russia has influence in Belarus, is militarily present in Moldova and Georgia, and also poses a threat to the Baltic states and the eastern border of the European Union.
"Comprehensive peace cannot be a simple ceasefire," emphasised Costa. The President of the European Council highlighted that peace must ensure that Russia is no longer a threat to any country.
The politician made an important declaration. He assured that the European Union will fully assume responsibility for building this peace. He added that defence will be a priority, and the European Commission is set to present proposals for joint defence financing by the EU.
