Russia's MiG‑35 completes trials. Orders expected soon
The Russians conducted a successful test (under combat conditions) of the new MiG-35 fighter jet. According to United Aircraft Corporation (UAC), the company responsible for the production of the aircraft, orders for the MiG-35 are expected to commence soon.
The MiG-35, an advancement of the MiG-29, was first flown in Russia in 2016. It was intended to replace older models, but Russia only purchased six units deployed to an aerobatic team. The military did not acquire the aircraft. In 2023, a renewed focus on MiG-35 production was announced as an alternative to the Su-75 programme.
End of MiG-35 tests over Ukraine
UAC representatives claim that the new aircraft's combat trials over Ukraine have just concluded. In recent years, the manufacturer has introduced a series of changes to the MiG-35's construction, resulting in the latest version fully meeting the Russian Federation's military expectations. UAC emphasises that the changes from previous versions are designed to ensure the MiG-35 is adapted for full-scale conflicts.
The MiG-35 has been equipped with technologies from the Su-57, including radar-absorbing coatings and modern navigation systems. It has been integrated with the latest weaponry, and its onboard electronics have been unified with the Su-35SM and Su-30SM2.
The new MiG-35
The aircraft is also known to have new engines featuring modular construction and digital control. These are RD-33K units, which propel the MiG to Mach 2.35, approximately 1,500 mph. The manufacturer also decided to redesign the wing compared to its predecessor, the MiG-29, to improve flight characteristics. The MiG-35 is classified as a "light fighter" despite its takeoff weight being 24,500 kg.
Details concerning the MiG-35 order for the Russian military remain unknown. The manufacturer does not disclose how many orders can be fulfilled, and it is also unclear when the jets might be produced and delivered to the units.
