Russian soldier lets Ukrainian evacuees go, branded a coward online
Volunteers from Ukraine shared a video showcasing their encounter with a Russian soldier. The military personnel halted the vehicle carrying evacuated civilians. After a brief assessment, he decided to let them pass, allowing them to continue their journey. The Russian blogosphere labelled him a "coward."
A video involving a Russian soldier and volunteers evacuating several civilians has surfaced online. The situation unfolded in Ukrajińsk, a small town in the Donetsk region.
The short film captures the moment of the encounter with the military personnel. The man wanted to know who the people in the vehicle were. The volunteer explained they were coming from Pokrovsk with evacuated civilians. Upon learning this, he instructed them to leave as quickly as possible. "Quickly, load the people and get out of here," said the Russian soldier.
At the end of the film, the volunteer is seen closing the boot of the car. Danil Zacharchenko and Oleksandr Humaniuk, who evacuated the civilians, decided to share this story. The film also caused a stir in Russia. It was commented on by Russian blogosphere users who strongly support the Kremlin's actions in Ukraine.
"He should have opened fire. Another sign of inappropriate, cowardly behaviour is lack of professionalism. He should have stopped the Ukrainians. The guy in the video is an idiot," Russians commented online regarding the Russian soldier's conduct towards the civilians.
Russians are advancing on Pokrovsk
It is no coincidence that civilians are being evacuated from Pokrovsk. The city is now the main target of the Russian army's offensive. Putin aims to capture Pokrovsk because it is an extremely important logistical point. Conquering it will open the way for the Russians to take control of the entire Donbas.
According to various sources, the Russian army is about eight kilometres from the city. There are reports that Pokrovsk is already within artillery range. Unfortunately, many signs suggest that the city will fall to the Russians. If Ukrainians defend it fiercely, it will likely share the fate of Bakhmut, which was razed to the ground.
